The People at Avongrove
We've profiled just four members of the Avongrove team here- because they are our public face. The team is, in fact, quite large with a number of support staff handling all the administrative and logistical issues to make sure that everything runs smoothly and that our clients are served to the very best of our ability.
And of course, most importantly, the people who really make it happen: the workers. We have approximately 500 at the estate, mostly women, completely committed to their work. The bushes require attention and care, and the leaves must be plucked to a precise standard to maintain the quality of our tea. Generations of workers have been at Avongrove for perhaps 100 years or more and the skill in their hands is passed down to their children and grandchildren.

Anand Kanoria
Anand was drawn to Darjeeling by the passion that exists in the tea industry. One visit to Avongrove was enough to convince him that this is what he wants to do. He is confident that with effort, Avongrove will be something special- a tea garden with high quality, Darjeeling organic teas. But he wants to make it more: a place that draws people to visit, that retains its natural beauty and charm, and where everyone smiles- the workers, the staff, the birds and our visitors. He studied in the University of Virginia (UVA) in the USA and now heads Avongrove within KPL International, the parent company.
Amber Subba
Amber Subba has grown up in the hills of Darjeeling and always been amidst tea. With years of experience, he is dedicated to making Avongrove a garden he is proud of. A master at tea manufacturing and the field, he loves his life in the hills. He is always eager to welcome visitors to Avongrove and promises to take you around the garden and the small factory where he carefully crafts our tea. His house is beautifully decorated with orchids. He is the garden manager at Avongrove.
Sanjoy Mukherjee
Sanjoy Mukherjee has been associated with the tea trade for many years now. He is an expert blender and taster. He is committed to making Avongrove’s teas aromatic, flavourful and attractive so they give the drinker an experience that is intensely enjoyable. Passionate, jolly, with a smile on his face; it is a lot of fun to engage him in a conversation. He is always available for questions and appreciates feedback on Avongrove teas. He heads Avongrove’s marketing.
Ashok Somaya
Ashok Somaya began working in tea in the Darjeeling and Dooars regions of north east India. He had a stint in Kenya and has now finally settled at his coffee estate in beautiful Coorg, in south India. He may have thought he had moved on from tea, but drawn to the Avongrove team, he is an exclusive consultant for us. He is very fond of flowers and traveling; with every visit to Avongrove he stocks up on a variety of orchids from Mr Subba’s garden.
